English, a beautiful language!

I originally had this in the December issue of the PTA Newsletter I edit, but I had to cut it out due to space, or lack thereof. So, I'm posting it here. These are just some of the things that keep me awake at night. And you?

Why can we get down and get up but we can only lie down and can’t lie up? And how come we can line up but not line down?

If we have bathrooms and bedrooms, why don’t we have livingrooms? And why is it a kichen and not an eating room or meal room?

How come we can shut a door, but we have to shut OFF a light? And if we can open a door, then why can’t we open a light?

How come we can LOOK at something but we can’t SEE at something?

How come we should KEEP OUT but we can’t KEEP IN? And what can we find out that we can’t find in? If we have a time out, why don’t we resume with time in?

Why do we ask how come when we can just ask why?

Why do we have to cut it out when we can just stop it?

Why do we hear a dog bark and not woof and a frog croak and not ribbit and a bird chirp and not peep when we can hear a cat meow or a cow moo or a duck quack?

How can you egg somebody on? Isn’t that a breakfast food?

How come we can say United States of America but not Mexico of America or Canada of America?
