I should know because I very nearly sliced my thumb off when I was making one today. Every year, Mack's holds a scarecrow contest where participants display scarecrows at the farm market. Patrons vote for their favorite and the money collected goes towards a local charity, and the top three best scarecrows are awarded prizes.
The elementary schools typically participate (or so I thought), and like past years, Moose Hill School PTA entered the contest of which a maximum of 15 are allowed. The person who made our scarecrow made Wally The Green Monster and I'm convinced that her creativity not only won us first prize, but led to the Red Sox World Series Championship. Laugh if you want, but the scarecrows are displayed for the month of October and must be removed before Halloween and when was that last game? You do the math.
This is my off year, when none of my children is a student at Moose Hill. Next year, Jeffrey will be the last of my four sons going to kindergarten there. Anyway, having passed the presidential baton to another energetic and willing mom, I was allowed to focus more on my responsibilities at Matthew Thornton and at our first PTA meeting, inquired about who was doing our scarecrow. And it was at this meeting that I learned Matthew Thornton did not, in fact, participate in this yearly tradition and when I asked why, was told it was due to some conflict of interest because the school principal happens to be the daughter-in-law of the owner of Mack's. Yeah, whatever. How many people even know that and I hardly thought it would make a difference. I didn't really care if we won or not; I just thought that it was important that we participate like the other schools in town. So, I said as much and told the PTA board that I was so doing a scarecrow on their behalf.
Which brings us to yesterday and today. I decided to go with a Radio Flyer theme (because next to the Peanuts keepsakes, they are my next favorite items to collect. I took one of the old Radio Flyer scooters I had and intended to have the scarecrow appear to be riding it. But the scarecrow was staked up too high, so I had to change my original design. While I was not sleeping last night, I came up with a better design, and went back today to correct and finish it. I still have to make one final touch and will then take pictures which I will show you, but that's another post. This one is about the stupid scissors, remember.
So, I was making small holes in the bottom of the scarecrow's jeans so I could lace the shoelaces of the shoes through so they'd stay on the scarecrow because he is mounted on a stake and his feet don't quite reach the ground. Well, denim is not the easiest fabric to poke a hole through, but I did it and on the last hole, managed to jam the scissors through so hard that they sliced my thumb. Honestly, I practically cut it off. My left hand has really taken a beating because don't forget the disfigured index finger about which I am very self-conscious since I caught it in the van door.
My injured thumb? It's still bleeding. At least the cut isn't on a joint so I shouldn't wind up with an ugly scar to remind me how I got it. I'll bet your thinking how great it is that the thumb isn't used to type on the keyboard. I was thinking the same exact thing!
I didn't really care about winning the contest but now I hope I do because then the injury won't seem so priceless. Haha, get it? Oh, and let me tell you about the creative sign I posted. The school district's motto is "Giving Wings to Children's Dreams". Our sign says, "Matthew Thornton PTA - "Strengthening the wings of children's dreams so they can (Radio) Fly." Clever, no?
ADDENDUM
In an effort to keep my injury from getting infected, I have been changing the bandages. The last time I did this, it finally stopped bleeding enough for me to get a better view of it and um, yeah. I said before I probably wouldn't have any permanent scars. No, I shouldn't have said that. I have a huge chunk of skin missing from my thumb. How lovely will that look once it's all healed!
Owwwww!
