Yesterday I took Christopher to get his long overdue haircut. We were leaving and after I buckled the boys into their seats, I closed the passenger side door to the van. Because my van is old and doesn't have that fancy automatic closing mechanism that the new vans have these days. So I closed the door. And in doing so, neglected to move my left hand out of the way. The door clicked shut with my left index finger caught in between.
Now, here is what I am really thankful for. That I wasn't mad and taking my anger out in closing that door because if I had, then I surely might have severed my finger completely. Also, that I didn't curse out loud, a typical reaction when I am inflicted with sudden and unexpected searing pain. No, I just jumped up and down and repeated my literal 'ows' over and over. "Ow, ow, ow, ow, ow..."
I managed to get into the van, start it and head towards home, all single-handedly driving with one hand while shaking the one with the injured finger. As if that would ease the throbbing pain. The gash on the top of the finger started bleeding heavily, and there wasn't a cloth or tissue to be found within reach. I had taken them all out last week to be laundered. By now, I am halfway home, and sucking on my finger to keep the blood from dripping. I remembered the baby wipes in the pocket behind my seat, and Christopher hands me some to wrap around my injury.
The pain wasn't too bad by the time I reached home. My finger is noticebly fatter than its identical right index finger. But it is still in one piece. I already said I was thankful for that. I bandaged it up and got on with my day.
By the time I went to bed, I had changed the Band-Aid at least a half-dozen times because it wouldn't stop bleeding. I didn't think the gash was deep enough to need stitches, but what do I know? Besides, it didn't hurt all that much. I took the proper steps in disinfencting it and protecting it from further harm.
This morning, I removed the latest Band-Aid and showered with my finger exposed and naked. I still can't bend it completely and it still won't stop bleeding. I have kept it exposed to the elements, hoping the air would help and stop the bleeding. But it's not.
Should I try some glue? Because even if it did require stitches, it's too late now.
