Bumpy

Do you remember when this happened? The first anniversary of the accident is coming up on February 28. I'll be at Loon and won't be able to post, so I'm giving you the story today.

I honestly regret taking a laissez-faire approach to this injury. I didn't learn until much later that had I addressed it immediately, care would have been taken to ensure minimal damage during the healing process. How was I to know that immobilizing my finger would have ensured much less scar tissue than what is apparent today? I didn't think the cut was deep enough to require stitches, much less immobilization since I thought it was great that I actually could still move it, which meant it wasn't broken. I suppose it would have been better if I had broken it, much like they say it's better to break an ankle than to sprain it.

So every day, I live with the regret that I wasn't proactive in properly treating it. It's blatantly obvious, in the glaring bump at the joint. And do you know, if I press on it that it still hurts? A whole year later!

The pictures aren't great, but the bump is very obvious, at least to me. It might be a blessing in disguise if that very same finger got caught in the door again. A painful blessing, yes, but I wouldn't hesitate to seek medical attention and request action be taken to ensure there is no visible sign there was ever an injury twelve months down the road.

So, we're taking the boys skiing for a few days. I don't anticipate any injuries, but then again, I can't predict if the unskilled skier is going to cross any of our paths. I also can't predict that I won't be the unskilled skier! I can ski, but don't challenge me with any black diamond trails. And although they are pretty much useless, I still need to hold my 'sticks' as Jeffrey would call them.
