Expired. Past Due. Late. Very.

If there is anybody who actually likes his or her mug on your license, I salute you. Because it tends not to be a photo worthy of any bragging rights whatsoever, and if you are like me, you look forward to that day four years down the road when it expires and you get to make yet another attempt at a better mug shot than those of the past, one you won't mind showing now and then in the next four years.

The last time I had mine taken was January 31, 2003. I remember that day clearly. But not clearly enough to recall if I had kids in tow or not. I think not, but it doesn't matter. I got it done and now fast forward four years to today.

Our two vehicles needed inspections, and G had his done this morning and miraculously, it passed. Not with flying colors, but it doesn't matter. It passed and he can continue driving it and get as much more use out of it as possible before it will be traded in for a new car. I have yet to get the van in for inspection and am not completely confident it will pass, mainly because the passengert side door handle is broken. But I have some time. I have until April 10, in fact, to figure out a way to rig the handle so it isn't noticed and with luck, the vehicle will pass and I'll get my sticker.

So for whatever reason, I was thinking I had the entire month of March to renew my license and opted to put it off until the last moment possible, at the very end of the month. Besides, it would give me more time to give my beautiful mane of hair to grow that 1/16 of an inch, making all the difference in my overall look for that awful mug shot.

But I had to meet a friend at the bank this morning for some PTA business. When I handed over my license and social security card, my two common forms of I.D., to the woman to process the necessary paperwork to get me valid as a second signer for the checks, she told me my license had expired.

Huh?

Didn't I have until the end of the month? Just like that which is allowed for getting your vehicle inspected. That monthly grace period. Why did I think it expired on March 31, 2007 and not March 3, 2007?

Because I don't look at the darn thing, that's why. And I just wasn't thinking about it. And I suppose I would have noticed it towards the end of the month when I planned to go and get it renewed.

But I will go do it today. It's only six days late. I didn't get caught. Life is good. I'll just have to live with the mug shot with me as is. Good enough.
