Some people purposely exchanged wedding vows today. Others gave birth to babies who will be considered forever lucky to have been born on the seventh day of the seventh month of the year 2007. Superstitious people will attribute their good fortunes that fell upon them today to the date.

But somebody died today. Shelley, my chemopatient, to whom I was assigned to be her chemo angel in May of last year, lost her very courageous battle to breast cancer. At the gates of heaven, she will be greeted by her mother and brother, both of whom also died from cancer.

It has been my honor and privilege to have been Shelley's chemo angel during the last year. Although her fight was one I knew she'd lose, the pain was nonetheless as strong as if I had known her longer. It is not fair that she endured what she did, although she was a fighter and a trooper right to the end.

The day before her 30th birthday, she was put on hospice. She died peacefully in her sleep and she will suffer no more. But she will be missed. God does take the best.

I think 7-7-07 is a lucky number for Shelley who is now at peace and had you providing support during her heroic struggle.
